Waters Punctuates Amateur Run with Two
Championships
17-year-old takes WORCS ATV
Open A and Production A Titles
His goal at the beginning
of 2007 was a record three WORCS titles in one season;
he missed it by one class – one race, in fact – but
Yamaha rider Justin Waters did earn a “never quit”
reputation. During several races during the year,
Waters came back from early mishaps or mechanical issues
to battle his way through the field of 20+ riders, often
to take a win. At the final round in Taft CA in
November, he finished on the podium and set fastest lap
times in Production A and Open A championships, wrapping
up both titles.
“I would have liked to have
three [titles]. That was always my goal. But at the
end, I was just so proud of what I did accomplish; it’s
hard to feel bad about it.”
After he solidified his
amateur titles, he elected to run the last Pro/ProAm
final of the year in the Pro division on Sunday.
“I had ridden so well on
Saturday that it was really the perfect time to move up
to Pro. Sean [Reddish, WORCS official] said I should be
running Pro in 2008 anyway, so this was just a little
bit earlier than we planned. I started out really strong
and several of the Pros had issues, so I think I was on
track for a solid top-five finish. Unfortunately, I had
mechanical issues too so it didn’t end up like I would
have hoped. But it was cool to take off the line with
them for the first time.”
While no formal
announcements have been made yet, Waters is planning to
run the WPSA and AMA MX Nationals in 2008, in the
Production A and QuadTerrain divisions. He’ll be
wrapping up his senior year of high school early to be
on the road and in top shape before the season starts in
May.
“If I can spend a season
focusing on motocross at that high level, I know it will
make me a better overall racer. I’ll be more
competitive in WORCS, and any series.”
Waters hopes to make some
WORCS dates in the 2008 season, riding under his
familiar number 95, but now in the Pro division.
“I know I’ve been lucky.
I’ve had incredible sponsors behind me the past two
years, some of the best products on the market, and I
couldn’t have accomplished what I have without them.
But it’s been a lot of work, maintaining a race program
on our own. I’m really looking forward to being part of
a formal Team. It’s taking my career to the next level,
definitely.”
