Allow Yourself Some Time
for Recovery After Your
More Intense Training
Sessions
by Bernard Hernandez,
V-Club MemberI have
discovered that allowing
my body some rest and
recovery time after each
of the more intense
training sessions really
helps my training and
gives me a steady
increase of fitness. I
have competed in many
cycling and duathlon
competitions, and I have
had muscle problems when
first beginning the
cross training sessions
for the season; I would
develop muscle soreness
that I had not had prior
to the cross training
sessions.
When I develop muscle
soreness or feel worn
down, my body is telling
me to rest and allow for
some extra recovery
time. But in order to
maintain a steady base
of cycling miles, I try
to incorporate a less
stressful approach. Some
of us recreational
athletes believe that we
need to train at an
intense level most of
the time; this is not
usually to best method.
Sometimes when soreness
sets in on my cycling
muscles, I use the
recovery time to
practice my
position/technique on
the bike while spinning
at a steady RPM and
reducing my cycling
speed. With this
approach and some good
rest, I can continue my
steady increase in
fitness. My body usually
performs better when I
am well rested, and this
is when I am more able
to tolerate the more
intense levels of
activity. When I allow
for this recovery time,
this tends to allow
gradual muscle tissue
development and
increased fitness. As I
have grown older, the
recovery time I need
between cycling and
cross training sessions
has also caused me to
use the training
sessions to practice
staying relaxed in the
saddle, and this adds to
the base miles without
adding intensity.
|
|
I have benefited from
this approach and l
believe that you can
also improve your
training session results
and endurance level so
that your body can
improve without
overstressing it, which
often results from
training sessions that
are more common during
the Spring season. This
basic understanding
about my physical
activity and how my body
reacts to it has
benefited me with an
increased level of
physical fitness. These
easy to remember habits
can also be helpful to
others so as to maintain
a consistent
fitness-training
pattern. ARE YOU AN
