Kenda Titus Hayes Athletes Rack up Podiums Around the USA!
Vail, CO, June 8th, 2008 - Heather Holmes, Amanda Riley-Carey and Andy Schultz gathered in Vail, CO this past weekend for the Annual Teva Mountain Games which hosts athletes from Mountain Biking, White Water Rafting, Climbing, Trail Running and Fly Fishing.
In the XC portion of the MTB event, Heather Holmes rode a fantastic race, finishing in 2nd place only to National and World Champion Katie Compton. Amanda Riley-Carey took the 12th spot in her first race since breaking her ribs in a crash at the NMBS in Santa Ynez.
On the men's side, Andy Schultz took the 4th spot and his words tell the story best:
I got back yesterday afternoon from Vail and the Teva Mountain Games. I have never gone to this event and it was really unique. The games bring in a whole bunch of different athletes, from kayakers, to rock climbers, to long-jumping dogs. It was cool to walk around a venue with some different types of companies that don't show up at mountain bike races. With $3000 for the win for both the men and the women there was a solid field in attendance. In fact, for the men, it felt a little like a mini NMBS race. The race was hard because of the strength of the field and it was my first race at elevation. Racing at elevation is a unique thing. You don't recover so you just work yourself into a bigger and bigger deficit. After the first of five laps I settled into 3rd place. I rode there until the start of the 5th lap when Tad Elliot passed me. At that point I was in full damage control and was doing my best not to go completely backwards. I was able to hang just behind Tad for the entire lap and actually caught and passed Tad on the last decent. At that point all I had to do was ride a conservative downhill but I pushed it a bit too much and ended up crashing. I was going pretty fast when I went down and flew quite a ways away from my bike. By the time I got up and got back to my bike Tad had passed me and I rolled in for 4th place.
Deer Vally, UT, June 8th, 2008 - Krista Park took the top spot at the Intermountain Cup race series for her first First of the season! With rain mixing with = snow and temperatures in the 30's, it wasn't much a day for cycling. After a delayed start for warmer temps, Krista joined her sister Erika, a local 1st year pro, on the start line. With almost frozen fingers and toes, Krista came across victoriously!
Pelham, AL, June 1st, 2008 - Robert Marion contiued his streak of podium finishes in the south east region by finishing 2nd at the Bump and Grind at Oak Mountain. This course is famous for the "Blood Rock" descent which forced many pros off their bikes on both laps of the 17 mile course. The week before, Robert competed in the 5th round of the SE Regional Championships where he finished 3rd. Philicia Marion took 6th place in the women's Pro/Expert field.
Helena, MT, June 1st, 2008 - Zephanie Blasi was wondering what to do on a Saturday when the mountain bike race she had entered was cancelled due to snow. Solution, load up the car with road bike gear and head to the nearest race. That event was the Cow Country Classic in Helena. Zephanie, eager to get in a good workout, went with the first attack of the day. This turned into a 2 person, 45 mile breakaway. Heading into the finish, Zephanie attacked her companion for the win.
