Kenda Pro seizes the “Day” with key signing to 2011 roster!
Sunday saw the closure of discussions with key former Pegasus
rider Ben Day, resulting in the signing of the stage race
specialist to the team's official roster for 2011.
Day has been a top stage race contender for many years in the
United States and has won both San Dimas and Redlands stage races,
among other top performances on more than one occasion. He
was voted VeloNews' Domestic Stage Race Rider of the year, and his
former FlyV Australia team secured the overall NRC team title, with
Day in the main hunt for the overall individual title.
With Pegasus running into many financial and political problems foiling their ProTour plans, ultimately having to put the project on hold, many of the world's best riders were without a team. Day, was immediately on KPC's radar. In fact, KPC had approached Ben on multiple occasions to migrate to Kenda's continental outfit that aspires for Pro Continental status on or near 2013.

Day, was immediately on KPC's radar. In fact, KPC had approached Ben on multiple occasions to migrate to Kenda's continental outfit that aspires for Pro Continental status on or near 2013.
"Having Ben is a perfect fit for us, and quite frankly the
only missing puzzle piece to this year's program," states team
founder and GM, Chad Thompson. Our team has already turned
heads with our significantly turbo-charged 2011 roster, and with
its recent race invitation announcements. Thompson goes on to
say, "We have spent seven years nurturing this program, and Day is
the key to helping us move forward to the next level."
Separation did not come easy for Ben, as his loyalties ran
deep with Chris White and the Pegasus project. Day, from day
one, was a driving force in the Pegasus vision and he hung on as
long as possible for something to happen. The fall-out was
most unfortunate, and Inferno Racing (the managing force behind
KENDA Pro Cycling presented by GEARGRINDER) is saddened by the
demise of Pegasus and our support is extended to White and the
Pegasus project. Day's loyalty and apprehension to part from
the project was deemed most admirable by KPC and its founder.
"The fact that Ben had such a hard time with the decision was
attractive to me", says Thompson, "In fact, we offered a great
package, despite the very late nature of his availability, our need
to shuffle the roster and to gain extra funding. Nonetheless,
he did finally decide to shift, and we are confident his loyalties
will grow here, with Inferno over 2011 and the years
following."
Ben Day had the following to say regarding the shift to
KPC:
"The amazing succession of events resulting in the demise of
our dreams with Pegasus to have an Australian ProTeam left me
absolutely devastated and questioning the sport. The past
couple of months following a roller coaster 2010 season have been
tough, to say the least, and it was with great regret that I had to
go back out into the marketplace for 2011 in the search for some
security."
"The silver lining came in the form of Chad Thompson at KENDA
Pro Cycling presented by GEARGRINDER. In very short time Chad
was able to come up with funds to make me a very late addition to
the team for 2011. I'm flattered by his commitment and
determination to get me, and I'm looking forward to working with
him, Frankie Andreu as director and seeing what my new teammates
and I can achieve together this year. I'm indebted to those
sponsors who have dug deep to get me on board, and I hope to honor
them with my performances."
"It wasn't easy to say goodbye to my old teammates and friends
at V Australia. They will forever remain my friends and I
will cherish the times I had there. I wish them the utmost
success for the future. But it's time to move forward and
just get back to racing my bike, for this is my life."
The news comes in the very same week that the team was
announced as a starting team for the 2011 Amgen Tour of California,
to be held in late May. The need to honor the domestic
peloton and perform for sponsors and the race's organizers itself
made the push for Day stronger in the final hours of discussions.
KENDA Pro Cycling presented by GEARGRINDER has many to thank
for their work to add Ben in the late hours before his commitment
was needed, and more information will be released on these details
in the coming weeks.
